Bitcoin Ljubljana meetup – June 2022
June 2 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Summer is almost here, and in this spirit our June meetup will take us on a journey to sunny Cuba, where our guest **Lea Kuhar** spent her vacation fighting financial oppression with Bitcoin. You can read the abstract of her presentation below.
**Hacking the American Embargo: Trading Bitcoins in Cuba**
In the lecture, I will outline the historical context and the current state of crypto trading in Cuba, the state that has been under a comprehensive economic embargo imposed by the USA for the last 60 years. The embargo that is preventing American companies from doing business with a Marxist island “frozen in time” is, among other things blocking modern financial services, such as Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress, Paypal, Skrill Stripe, etc. As a part of the fight against the embargo, the Cuban central bank has made a historic decision to join El Salvador in embracing decentralized virtual currencies. In August 2021, they accepted »Resolution 215«, a deferral that allows the citizens of Cuba to own and trade cryptocurrencies. Less than a year later, we can see the first effects of the excepted resolution.
The lecture will be divided into two parts. In the first part, I will present a historical background of crypto trading in Cuba and the potential of cryptocurrencies in the fight against the embargo. In the second part, I will present my own personal example of exchanging Bitcoins for Cuban pesos on [QBita](https://qbita.org/), an app developed by Italian-Cuban entrepreneur Mario Mazzola.
**Lea Kuhar** has a PhD in philosophy. Between 2016 and 2020, she worked as a young researcher at the Institute of Philosophy, ZRC SAZU.
